Mercenary is a perk available at the very beginning of the game for all heroes. You will start the game with 3000 bonus minerals, and 3 additional Talent points. Every major boss killed and Hive destroyed will give an additional 3000 minerals. Mercenary also permanently doubles your Hero's sight range, but it is unknown whether it doubles after all other sight increasing buffs, or the base vision only.

This perk is best paired up with agressive nukes early game, and thus making it mandatory for one in the group to have it for faster pushing.
This perk is best paired with Compartmentalization, as it gives a massive boost to the completion of [[Lightweight Equipment Mastery]], making the completion of the mastery that much faster. Should one opt to go for [[Weapons Research Mastery]], the 3000 bonus minerals after each Hive or major boss is also a great help. Usually you'll have your Lightweight Equipment fully researched by the time you reach your first boss, and have Weapons Research at some point in the near future.
 
   
While this perk may seem like a good idea for nuking, the amount of minerals offered per major boss and hive aren't much altogether. With a regular nuke cost, it will grant you two nukes, and would require that you focus on a nuke-heavy build with the modular nuke talent to make it even worth it. If anything, it's worth the 3 free talent points at the beginning.
